Flamengo Football Club is the most famous of the Clube de Ragatas do Flemengo sports clubs and is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They compete in both Rio de Janeiro’s state league – the Campeonato Carioca, and Brazil’s national league – the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A (Brasileirao). The football clubs home stadium is Gavea, however due to the low attendance capacity they actually play their home matches at the biggest stadium in Brazil, the Maracana. They play in their traditional colours of scarlet and black hoops, white shorts.
Founded in 1885 as a rowing club, the football club didn’t actually play its first game of football until 1912 after several players from Fluminense broke away and founded the Flamengo Football Club. Since then Flamengo have become one of the most successful teams in Brazilian club football history.
Flamengo have won the Campeonato Carioca 32 times, which is a Brazilian record, the Brasileirão on six occasions, with the most recent success in 2009. They have also won the Copa do Brasil twice. Flamengo also won the 1981 Copa Libertadores, South Americas’ most prestigious football tournament, becoming the first Carioca team to win the competition in its illustrious history.
With approximately 36 million supporters worldwide, Flamengo are regarded to be one of the most widely supported team in the world. FIFA have also bestowed the honour of being one of the most successful football clubs of the 20th century.
